BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – The Louisiana Christian University women's soccer team got goals within the first five minutes of each half by
Katalina Medina which lifted the Wildcats to a 3-1 win over the Blue Mountain Christian Toppers Saturday afternoon at the BMC Sportsplex.
Medina got the scoring started for Louisiana Christian (1-1) in the fifth minute as she took in a pass from
Isabella Urbaneto and placed the ball in the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead over Blue Mountain Christian (0-1).
That led held nearly all the way to halftime until
Giselle Laing doubled the advantage with less than a minute remaining before the break, scoring her first goal of the year to put the Wildcats up 2-0 as the two teams went to the break.
Shortly after the second half kicked off, Medina picked up her brace as she got free and beat the goalkeeper for her second goal of the contest in the 47
th minute.
BMCU pulled one back in the 66
th minute, but LCU allowed no more from the Toppers.
"What a first win for these ladies and this team," said LCU head coach
AJ Ostrowski, who got his first win as the coach of the Wildcats in the contest. "We've dealt with a lot of adversity this year as a unit already to start the season and it just felt good to achieve it together. Our first game of this road trip, we knew our quality and knew we could be better, we showed that today. I am so proud of the strides we have made in such a short period of time. These girls are hungry, on and off the field, and it's exciting to see their passion for this game. We press on, the season is long, but this is the building of something special."
Urbaneto, who was credited with her first assist of the season on the match's first goal, was the team's top shot taker in the match, putting up eight shots, four of which were on target.
Laing took four shots and put three of them on frame, scoring her first goal of the season in the process.
Medina and
Manoella Santos both took three shots in the match with both putting two shots on goal. Both of Medina's shots on target resulted in her first two goals as a Wildcat.
Izzy Childs got her first assist of the year on Laing's goal late in the first half.
LCU took 24 shots as a team in the match, 12 were on goal.
Sara Mendivelso (1-0) got the start in net for LCU and played the first 45 minutes, getting credit for three saves and didn't concede any goals.
Marta Papandrea came on after halftime and played the final 45 minutes, making a pair of saves while conceding a goal.
The two LCU goalkeepers saw 10 shots total taken towards their net by Blue Mountain Christian, six of which were on target.
The Wildcats come home for the first time in 2026 on Friday as Bethel comes to Pineville. Kickoff of Friday's match against the Bethel Wildcats (0-1) is set for 5 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
