TEXARKANA, Texas – The #18/#15 Louisiana Christian University women's tennis team closed out the Texas A&M-Invitational with a pair of wins to sweep through the event, beating the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles 4-0 before knocking off the host, (RV) TAMUT Eagles, 6-1 in the nightcap.
Match 1 - #18/#15 Louisiana Christian 4, Oklahoma Wesleyan 0
In the first match of the day on the Tennis Courts at Texarkana College, #18/#15 Louisiana Christian (3-3, 1-0 RRAC) rolled through Oklahoma Wesleyan (2-3). In doubles, both
Raquel Coelho Rodrigues and
Valeria Callejo on court two and
Akari Uchiyama and
Ana Sofia Ferrer Martinez on court three rolled to 6-0 wins to give the Wildcats the doubles point.
In singles, Ferrer Martinez won on court four 6-1, 6-3 and Uchiyama took a 6-0, 7-5 win on court six to put the Wildcats on the verge of victory. Coelho Rodrigues brought the match to a victorious conclusion on court two with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 triumph, bringing an end to the proceedings.
Match 2 - #18/#15 Louisiana Christian 6, (RV) Texas A&M-Texarkana 1
The Wildcats closed out the event by opening Red River Athletic Conference play with a dominant win over Texas A&M-Texarkana (7-1, 0-1 RRAC), who received votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll.
Ferrer Martinez and Uchiyama got LCU started fast in doubles with a 6-2 win in the number three matchup. Callejo and Coelho Rodrigues secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win in the number two match.
In singles, LCU rolled through to close out the win. Ferrer Martinez picked up the next point as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win in court four. Callejo soon followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the number three match, putting the Wildcats on the precipice of victory.
That one needed for the win came not long after as
Farren Allysia Sandy took down her opponent on court five, 6-2, 6-1, giving LCU the team in.
Uchiyama added to the total with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court six. Coelho Rodrigues closed out the scoring on court two with a 6-0, 6-3 win for LCU's final point.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday as Dillard makes the drive up from the Crescent City for a match. Opening serve of Friday's match against the Bleu Devils (0-2) is set for 2 p.m. at the Richard L. Crowell Tennis Center.
