WACO, Texas – The Louisiana Christian University men's soccer program is off to a blistering start in 2024 and so is goalkeeper
Rodrigo Silva, who was selected as the Red River Athletic Conference Defender of the Week as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Â
Silva, a senior from Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, built off his stellar run in the 2023 postseason, which earned him an RRAC All-Tournament Team selection, to pick up his first weekly award following career starts number 23 and 24 at LCU.
Â
In the two matches versus Texas Wesleyan and USAO, the former Rogers State transfer ceded an early goal to the Rams (5th minute) before shutting out both squads over the remaining 187:58 he spent between the pipes before being relieved by Head Coach
David Castillo in favor of
Juan Diego Ramirez, who completed the combined clean sheet against the Drovers.
Â
The 2023 recipient of Louisiana Christian's Champions of Character nomination, widened his already healthy lead by a half-game with his combined shutout, topping all goalies to come through "The Hill" by 6.5 matches now with 10.5 in Orange and Blue.
Â
He is also the school's leader in terms of goals against average (1.07), shrinking his number by 0.04 and sits second all-time for save percentage (75.2%) with his eyes focused on potentially cracking the top-ten for saves by the end of the year, sitting on 76 at the moment, 44 back of #10 Jayson Stewart (2008) with 120.
Â
Silva, his fellow netminders, and the rest of the group look to make a huge statement Saturday night when they look to dispatch the 20th-ranked Crusaders of William Carey on their own turf (
Danny Owens Field) at 5 p.m. in the Hub City.
