KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Louisiana Christian University men's soccer program might be the second seed in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament, but they are still the highest-ranked team in the league according to the NAIA, slotting in at number 28 nationally, ahead of the third seed Xavier of Louisiana (42nd) and the regular season champions of LSU Shreveport (Unranked).
The Cats sport the best season winning percentage (.706) in school history after eclipsing last year's mark (.700) while a win on Friday would tie for the most wins in a campaign at 11.
As a whole, the club has compiled the 11th-most shutouts in the NAIA (9), has scored the 25th-most goals (45), which have been setup by a top-25 worthy number of assists as well (36).
Three student-athletes have been the primary reason for the meteoric rise of the squad as
Sergio Pita Martin,
Adrian Amoros Navarro, and
Rodrigo Silva forming a terrific trio.
Winger / striker Pita Martin leads the Red River in points (29), goals (13), and penalty kick goals (2) while being gifted with the unteachable clutch gene, producing three game-winners to land himself among the top-35 in that category.
While his country mate gets most of the spotlight as the primary goal scorer, midfielder
Adrian Amoros Navarro has been one of the most selfless players in the nation, dishing out the eighth-most assists (13), logging the 14th-highest assists average (0.76), and ranking second in the league behind fellow Spaniard Pita Martin for overall points (27).
The backbone of the lockdown defense has been keeper
Rodrigo Silva, spending all but 35 minutes between the pipes as he boasts the 11th-most wins in the NAIA (10) and is 13th for complete game shutouts at seven.
LCU will attempt to make a deep tournament run back to the RRAC Championship Game, starting on Saturday at 5 p.m. as #2 Louisiana Christian hosts #7 Texas A&M-San Antonio for a chance to advance to the Semifinals in Texarkana next weekend.
